Natural Semantics in Artificial Intelligence

چکیده
This paper discusses human semantic know ledge and processing in terms of the SCHOLAR system. In one major section we discuss the imprecision, the incompleteness, the open-endedness, and the uncertainty of people's knowledge. In the other major section we discuss strategies people use to make dif ferent types of deductive, negative, and functional inferences, and the way uncer tainties combine in these inferences.

Montague's Semantics and Boolean Semantics for Natural Language Representation
Naturallanguage processing constitutes the subfield of artificial intelligence which deals with the development of computer programs able to understand natural language. Montague's semantics and Boolean semantics attempt to apply some techniques of mathematical logic and of algebraic lattice theory respectively for the representation of natural language with a view to its automatic processing. ...
متن کاملCommonsense Ontology and Semantics of Natural Language
This paper is concerned with the problem of what ontological knowledge underlies the semantic structures of natural language. It discusses some proposals made by workers in philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science and artificial intelligence in the last few years. Section 1 sketches the basic view in regard to the relationship between ontology and semantics. Section 2 points out the importanc...
متن کاملDynamic and Epistemic Semantics of Questions: The Logic of Consultation
Preface This thesis is the result of my research project on the dynamic and epistemic semantics of questions, performed at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, University of Amsterdam, from May, 1st – July, 31st, 2000. The thesis combines aspects of semantics and artificial intelligence. Formal semantics of natural language (henceforth semantics) is, one might argue, strictly not ...
متن کاملNatural Semantics for a Mobile Robot
Functionalism is the view that a system (or system component) grasps the meaning of its inputs to the extent that it produces the right outputs. If a system retrieves all and only relevant documents in response to a query, we say it understands the query. If a robot avoids bumping into walls, we say it understands its sensors and its environment. If a chess program beats the world champion, we ...
متن کاملMaking Use of Similarity in Referential Semantics
Similarity is well-known to be a core concept of human cognition, e.g., in categorization and learning. Therefore, expressions of similarity in natural language are of special interest: How to account for their meaning including the results on similarity in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence without abandoning referential semantics? In this paper we will lay out a framework connectin...
